First off, I’m new to research on this drug. It’s a stimulant so it will definitely have factors that tend toward keeping you awake and alert. The question is when does it do that?
Even a drug known or intended to have certain effects or benefits is going to vary among people depending on their own body and brain chemistry, dosages, interaction with other medications and more.
I’ll research further and report back here. If you suffer with insomnia and attention deficit, you want the best optimized solution possible. This topic came under discussion among the crew but it’s important to find out as much as possible about what any drug will do and won’t do as well as any side effects or unintended consequences.
Some opinions from the web:
A few things:
- Provigil/Modafinil is not as miraculous as I thought it would be… Modafinil works wonders for those individuals who are nap-inclined, who may have DPSD, or have an occasional need to stay up late working on something. I believe the main benefit is that it tricks your brain into not acknowledging tiredness and fatigue signals that would normally tell you to crawl into bed. If you don’t have daytime fatigue problems then I can’t imagine it being worthwhile to take Modafinil.
- Google Knowledge Graph:
Stop using modafinil and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- fever, sore throat, headache, and vomiting with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;
- bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness;
- easy bruising or bleeding;
Modafinil reduces extreme sleepiness due to narcolepsy and other sleep disorders, such as periods of stopped breathing during sleep (obstructive sleep apnea). It is also used to help you stay awake during work hours if you have a work schedule that keeps you from having a normal sleep routine (shift work sleep disorder).
This medication does not cure these sleep disorders and may not get rid of all your sleepiness. Modafinil does not take the place of getting enough sleep. It should not be used to treat tiredness or hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder.
It is not known how modafinil works to keep you awake. It is thought to work by affecting certain substances in the brain that control the sleep/wake cycle.
This drug may perform better and have less side effects for military missions where in the past, pilots and other personnel have used amphetamines to stay awake on critical missions.

New drug may help soldiers stay awake
Doctors unsure of long-term effect
U.S. soldiers are staying awake for days and nights on end in Iraq, and many are almost certainly benefiting from military research into pills that let them work for 40 hours straight, without feeling “wired” and without crashing afterward.
Soldiers in past wars have taken stimulants when they can’t afford to fall asleep, but these have all had side effects: poor judgment, jumpiness and the need for extra sleep as soon as the soldier stops popping them.
But the new stay-awake pills appear to have no side effects, at least in the short term.
U.S. military studies found that soldiers can stay awake and function alertly for 40 hours, get eight hours of sleep, and then stay awake for 40 more, all without the impaired judgment of old-fashioned uppers.
